Invoking a 17th-century ceramic plate bearing the words “You & I are Earth” recovered from a London sewer, the neon work is at once accusatory, consoling, and encouraging. Speaking to viewers on multiple levels, it serves as a reminder of our mortality, our temporariness, that we came from soil and will return to it; that we humans are not separate from nature, we are part of it, essentially made of the same substance, of earth; that the two entities “you" and "I" are in themselves the whole world, they are everything, nothing else matters.
